WINCHESTER- Caroline Colarusso, Republican candidate for State Representative, will be speaking at The Gables of Winchester on Friday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. She is a Stoneham Selectwoman, community volunteer, professional manager, and a dedicated public servant. Her position would represent Winchester, should she be successful in her run for State Representative.
Caroline has always given back to her community. She served as a Learn to Skate Instructor, a Stoneham Youth Hockey coach and a member of the Stoneham Youth Hockey Board of Directors. When the Stoneham High School Girls Varsity Ice Hockey team at Stoneham High was experiencing low participation rates, Caroline volunteered to assist with coaching and recruiting of girls so that the program would be sustainable. Today the girl’s hockey team is a vibrant organization.
Before being elected to the Board of Selectmen, Caroline served on the Finance and Advisory Board for five years. She earned a reputation as a fiscal watchdog for the taxpayers. Caroline was a member of the coalition to repeal the automatic gas tax.
Caroline has served as a manager for 27 years with the U.S. Postal Service, where she was responsible for overseeing troubled operations with budgets ranging from $20-35 million. Caroline was charged with turning these offices from unprofitable centers to break-even, and then moved them toward profitability. She managed staffs of 100+ employees and 6-12 managers. Her work received several performance awards.
Like so many families, Caroline has faced some difficult challenges. She cares for her mother who is suffering from an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s. Caroline understands the hardships so many families face, caring for a sick family member. That’s why she works so hard to support our senior population. Caroline has spoken to many groups about the challenges of caring for a parent. Caroline is a graduate of Emmanuel College.
According to Caroline’s web site (http://www.caroline4rep.com) she will put people ahead of politics by holding weekly office hours, send out newsletters and hold forums for seniors.
To lower the tax burden on citizens, Caroline will support reducing the sales tax back to 5 percent to make local businesses more competitive with online businesses; vote against all attempts to link taxes to inflation; vote against the new tax on paint; keep in place Proposition 2 ½ so that property taxes don’t increase.
To revive our economy, Caroline will support small businesses that are responsible for creating 3 out of 4 new jobs in Massachusetts. She will work to pass the Small Business Bill of Rights that reduces the corporate filing fees for new businesses; make state agencies more business friendly and reduce needless regulations.
Caroline will restore integrity to the State House that has been plagued with numerous scandals, including three Speakers being convicted of felonies, by ending the legislative exemption from the open meeting law; ending the legislative exemption from the open records law; and ending the legislative exemption from the fair procurement law. She will require the following: committee votes to be published online; give every member access to the can to see any last minute changes to legislation; entire budget to be debated and published online 24 hours before the final vote is taken; and public hearings on all tax bills.
In addition, she will work to improve education by helping to prepare our children to compete in the new global marketplace; reform welfare and related fraud; require fiscal accountability; strengthen public safety; and support seniors. There will be question and answer period and the opportunity to share concerns with the candidate.
